Image Gallery: Wireless Telehealth Brings Medical Help To Those In Need

High-tech developments such as an 802.11-equipped stretcher and mobile vans for digital mammogram screening means living far from a doctor doesn't have to result in poor care.

GlobalMedia designed TransportAV for Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The telemedicine device mounts on a stretcher and supports 3G, 4G, and 802.11 networks.

GlobalMedia's TotalExam high-resolution camera connects with TransportAV. The camera can be used for video or freeze-frame pictures if there isn't enough network bandwidth in the region for clear images in motion.

TransportAV also includes a stethoscope, ClearSteth, that communicates wirelessly with the system.

ClearProbe, a general-purpose wireless probe, is among equipment that GlobalMedia donated for use in Haiti after the recent earthquake.

Using telemedicine gear, which includes videoconferencing capabilities, remote University of Pittsburgh Medical Center stroke specialists can observe, talk to, and examine suspected stroke patients in other hospitals' ERs quickly, as well as view the patients' CAT scans and electronically pull up other test data.

Medical and non-medical peripheral devices can be connected to Polycom's Practitioner Cart HDX, letting high-def images be shared with off-site specialists.

Massachusetts General Hospital's PICU Bot lets physicians remotely control robotics to examine patients. It's being studied by Mass General to see how improved communication between attending physicians and ICU staff impacts critical care, said Dr. Natan Noviski, chief of the hospital's pediatric ICU.

Cisco's use of telepresence technologies lets remote clinicians examine and communicate with Cisco workers while at company facilities.
