re: 50,000 Health IT Jobs: HIMSS, HR Gurus Want You
I have spoken to many highly qualified and experienced IT resources have applied for positions in the Healthcare industry and the response is typically "do you have experience as a nurse or as a healthcare practitioner?". Until the healthcare industry rejects the notion that you have to have medical experience to bring your IT skills to bear, they will continue to struggle with innovation and improved service to the public.

Epic and Atirix products are a couple of the packages being used, so if you have experience with them you will be able to job hop, but I don't know that either of them have any training available other than through the company using the software and the support provided to them. Epic's site refers only to training support for their end users.

are you an IT professional or just looking for a job in healthcare?
Epic is only 1 of several software packages that clinics and hospitals use everyday.
As an IT professional, being certified on a specific product should not be necessary.

I applied for a couple of jobs in healthcare and got told the I did not meet the requirements of the job because I was not certified in the Epic software so what good will this do if someone can not get trained in the software.

Knowing that many IT workers have been laid off or let go in the recent past, I hope this initiative works. And it's a win for the HR professionals who don't have the intrinsic knowledge about the needs their specific organizations have. Anything that says there is a labor shortage in the US and there are grants and educational programs around it has to be a good thing for our economy.
