Re: finally
For those not on an unlimited messaging plan, WhatsApp, and similar services, can be useful. They are also really good when traveling outside the US where WiFi is free, but mobile roaming is not.

Re: finally
I use a competive product to WhatsApp for all my group text messages to family and different groups of friends.  Interestingly, i'm getting close to the point where I'm wondering, why pay for my monthly text service with my carrier when I can use IP-based text messaging.

Re: finally
I'm curious: Do you use WhatsApp instead of traditional texting or iMessage?

Re: finally
No doubt that WhatsApp is a great service. My family uses it for group text and international texts. If teens are using it, then it probably is a smart move for Facebook.

Re: finally
WhatsApp is also popular for a lot of folks I know who have friends and family scattered all over the place -- and thw world -- who want to keep up on group texts.  I use a competing service, but clearly WhatsApp is the place to be.

Re: finally
Exactly, Wyatt. Facebook knows that teens are a very important demographic, and it knows that they're leaving Facebook. WhatsApp -- which is popular among teens -- was a strategic acquisition for this reason.

Re: finally
I think you're point is somehow reflected in the price Facebook paid for WhatsApp. Facebook needs to stay in front of hundreds of millions people daily, even if its not on Facebook itself.

Re: finally
The irony is that those under 30 are leaving Facebook at an ever increasing rate. In a gross generalization, not too many teens want to be transparent on the same social network where their grandparents are hanging out catching up. Of course, grandma probably doesn't use email either.

Re: finally
After spending $19B to grab WhatsApp -- and given the general assumption no one under 30 uses email anymore -- it makes sense that FB would focus on group texting and abandon email.
