It seems likely this market will segment -- this base level infrastructure at race-to-the-bottom prices, and then specialized clouds that cater to government, healthcare, or high-velocity transactions. Might that allow vendors to command some premium pricing?

Yes, specifically competition that has the cash reserves and stomach to call Amazon's bluff on price drops. After all, while sharply dropping prices are good for IT short term, they do tend to stifle new players in the space, and thus innovation.

Will Microsoft win continuous operation medal?
Amazon Web Services is known for and was the first to offer the video encoding service that Azure will be providing. But you're right, Windows and Microsoft technologies have always been a prime target for hackers. So far Azure has maintained a good record of continuous uptime. Will the Olympics change that? We'll see.

Chas: MicroSoft better have worked pretty hard on their Cyber Security plan because Russia is the wild wild west for Cyber attacks.  If all the athletes get their identities stolen at the games MicroSoft's PR victory will look rather lame.

Portability?
How is portability when you deploy with Azure? Are you locked into Microsoft technology or could you move to a virtual machine on some other provider fairly easily?

Microsoft's Azure to serve as video encoding platform for Oympics
NBC announced this morning that it will use Microsoft's Azure as the cloud encoding and hosting platform for the Sochi Olympics. I wonder, was this a last minute decision or was Microsoft restrained from announcing it until the day before the openuing ceremony? Anyway, it's a coup for Microsoft, PR-wise.
