re: Cloud Deployment Debate: Bake Or Bootstrap?
Excellent argument by Joe Masters Emison here. It reflects the difference between the hugely varied applications in the enterprise data center, some of which will be moved to the cloud, and an Internet-based business like Netflix, which is doing a few of the same operations over and over again at very large scale. A Netflix becomes a baker; the enterprise cloud user, in general, better be a bootstrapper.

re: Cloud Deployment Debate: Bake Or Bootstrap?
I should clarify that some of the NetflixOSS tools are more compatible with bootstrapping than others, but the core components of NetflixOSS (e.g., Asgard) require baking and image management (although there are certainly tools that Netflix has released that make image management easier than it would otherwise be). Also, it is certainly possible to bake a bootstrapped image (or launch within a PaaS like CloudBees and then bake an image, which could be considered bootstrapping or at least a relation thereof) and use it with NetflixOSS, but I still see the same general cons that I listed above.

It's easy to see how a company that thinks it's just running a few pilots or moving only a couple of services to the cloud could end up in the "babes" category. Engineers, in my experience, hate reading the manual.

re: Cloud Deployment Debate: Bake Or Bootstrap?
What this really comes down to is that -- like many things in life -- there is NEVER a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to any XaaS deployment. You're absolutely right that what works for Netflix may not work for somebody else. Netflix has VERY different cloud demands than many other (I daresay most other) enterprises.

Thanks for the more in-depth insights about machine images.

Maybe that's a sign that there aren't yet enough women in engineering. ;)

Perhaps another question to address is whether Amazon is the correct place to run your cloud projects.
