re: What Enterprise Social Networks Lack: Purpose
TIBCO's entry into the ESN space, tibbr, is exactly this. A network of purpose. Now in our 3rd year and 4th release, tibbr users search, find, and follow "subjects", and maybe a few people too. But the focus is to follow relevant infomration and data feeds that help them get thier work done faster and leverage tools (smart devices) & skills (social apps) they are already good at. Many customers who have hit the adoption wall with failed "FB for the Enterprise" solution approaches have found a great match the second time around with tibbr 4.

re: What Enterprise Social Networks Lack: Purpose
Russ and Mary Lou's article is well timed and on target. Companies such as Microsoft and Salesforce.com are investing significantly in their social networking technologies, Yammer and Chatter, respectively. Yet, we all struggle with effective deployment of these technologies within our organizations. We build it GÇô but they donGÇÖt come.

As suggested, these networks need purpose. The key success factors noted are right on, however, there is also the need to change long standing habits. If companies are serious about deploying these initiatives GÇô and they should be GÇô the social platform needs to be the location for the information or the exchange of the information. FacebookGÇÖs GÇ£stickinessGÇ¥ is directly related to itGÇÖs being the avenue for the sharing of information.

re: What Enterprise Social Networks Lack: Purpose
Where I work we have a social network, but it is mainly ignored as it focuses too much on the social part. Rather than use it as a tool to bring distributed teams together for a better work environment we are asked to post photos and talk about our pets and hobbies. Some seem to like it and tell everyone in the company way more than anyone in the company should know, but it basically is just wasting IT resources.

Very good - if the site isn't articulating and generating business value then it's of questionable value. Clearly articulating these, or rather getting the users to achieve this is pivotal to success.

re: What Enterprise Social Networks Lack: Purpose
I think one of the important things to keep in mind with social business approaches is that while targeted, achievable goals are important, so, too, is the ability to flexibly expand the platform when new opportunities arise and/or are identified.

re: What Enterprise Social Networks Lack: Purpose
Too many companies overlook this need for a clear purpose -- they assume employees want a social platform, so they build one and are disappointed it's not being used that much. People don't want social-for-social's sake at work; they want to do their jobs and get home (so they can get back to using Facebook with their friends)
