The statement that Sears aquired Kmart is incorrect.  Kmart actually aquired Sears, and then chnged the name of the parent company from Kmart to Sears.  Unfortuately the Sears name by itself didnt' seem to help very much...

Lost Opportunity to convert catalog operations to online retailing

August 1993 Sears closed its catalog business.  July 1994 Amazon was founded.  At the top of Sears there have been mostly money manager CEOs.  Innovation and creativity are an unthoughtful risk to money managers.  Sears catalog operation was ripe for front-ending with a web function but management was to engrossed in maximizing profits via conventional retail leading to "cheaper" products sold at higher prices giving less value to the customer than other retailers store front or otherwise repeated for over two decades.
