Data is like sweet corn...
Good column and, yes, data is like fresh produce. It's most like sweet corn, best used immediately after picking, such as when a customer is mulling over a purchase decision on the Web site and you can help him reach a decision.

Is a common data fabric inevitable?

This is a fantastic perspective on a difficult issue. The clamour for a Chief Digital Officer can sometimes be deafening. Yet the crux is what you have pointed out - the need to share data throughout the organization. I think this is critical, and see the increasing need for a common data fabric.

In my work, I see this manifested every day. Business analysts accessing web server data to better manage customer engagement; devops teams accessing marketing data to build better solutions; finance analysts accessing performance data to predict future hardware budgets; marketing leaders accessing signup data from mobile apps to monitor campaigns in real time.

So I have no doubt that a common data fabric is critical to enable sharing of information across teams, departments, and businesses; and perhaps even beyond (e.g. partners, agents, channels, suppliers, service providers, contractors, etc.). As technology becomes increasingly distributed and fragmented, this seems inevitable. The only way to connect such a diverse ecosystem is by connecting with the data it produces.

As an aside, this is one reason I love your work. Pragmatic and insightful with an eye on what works both for IT and for business leaders. Keep it up mate, I always enjoy your perspectives.
