Re: First...
Innovation should be a key focus for IT, but only if the daily systems are running like clockwork. If there are routine challenges and outages, the organization will never look to IT to be a leader. IT needs to make sure its own house is in order.

Re: First...
There is a shift in the IT world though that keeping systems up and running is taking a back seat to the innovative push.  I'm not saying this is a bad thing but staffing levels and skill sets need to reflect that shift.  Chances are if you want a more innovative IT mindset you've got those innovative thinkers on your team you just need to get them out of the day to day grind so that they can get you moving forward and you can't freak out if the shift away from reliability means you have a short period where uptime slips as the team adjusts.

Re: First...
Good points, SaneIT. Without the proper human resources available, it is nearly impossible to pursue both always-on excellence in delivery and future-thinking innovation. I would make innovation second to optimizing and automating systems. If, as an IT leader, you can't keep systems up, why would your organization even consider letting you try to push innovations, regardless of how much those might positively impact the bottom line. If your day-to-day operational activities are done with the highest levels of excellence and efficiency, then you have a foundation and track record upon which to build the future.

First...
"First, IT is crucial to the business and it must provide systems that are always on, always available, and always responsive."

"First, go out into the business that you are responsible for and live a day in the shoes of the sales people or the warehouse people or the support people," he said. "Sit alongside them and see how their day goes and what matters to them."

I tend to run into a couple problems with those two firsts.  Staffing still tends to be on the low side in IT groups compared to the 90s and early 00s.  If you've got enough staff to keep systems up, always available and responsive you don't often have the staff to go out and rub elbows with everyone this way.  This gets in to a delicate balancing act for many companies.  Maybe staffing sizes will trend upward again in the coming years but right now I see a lot of groups that are shorthanded and doing much more with less.
