Re: True
Consumerization has had an effect in the enterprise in the past and the process seems to be speeding up. The ratio of IT employees to devices or applications continues to decrease.

On the one hand, this can be viewed as a threat because, the devices or applications that end up in the enterprise were not built with the enterprise environment in mind. On the other hand, it might be a big opportunity as half of the work has already been completed -- the devices/applications are built and only the control layer has to be created.

Brian,

And the control layer might well be automated in quite many industries, or all of them at some point.

Re: True
@Susan, that is a great point and some of the automation will come through knowledge transfer exercises i.e. the IT department will provide information to other departments about the advantages and risks of for instance, cloud storage. Once the information is transferred then, IT can move their focus towards bigger business issues and opportunities.

@Brian: Since that's how the future will reall be, I'd strongly suggest the IT folks start to take this as opportunities rather than as a threat. In the future, there'll be more and more stuff that will come off the shelf and would require minimum integration. The internal infrastructure needs to be robust enough to handle it.

This is what we need
Perhaps if we got the muppets in and filmed something like this CEOs and politicians might actually understand how important security is.

They don't get it yet.

Yes, Muppets. gotta love muppets, or dogs dressed in funny costumes with people hands. For some reason people will watch that for way too long. Maybe we could fit some of the more boring parts in an instructional video so they know why Shadow IT is an issue. (and becasue it's th eholidays, put them in Santa hats.

Evolution means learning and applying.
If we do not learn from the mistakes of the past we are destined to repeat our mistakes in the present and future.

This is very true. I have heard that the true drfinition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing...but expecting different results.
