Upgrades: When We Microsoft Get This Down ?

"...Not only that, Windows 7 or 8.1 users wanting to upgrade to Windows 10 must now go through a two-step process. They first need to download and upgrade to the July 29 version of Windows 10, and then download and upgrade to the just released version."

As one who is a member of this windows 8.1 group, I was setting aside time for this upgrade, now it looks like I need to set aside even more time.

I thought MS was getting better at this ?  Oh well, maybe if I wait long enough, someone will figure out how to make these two upgrades - just one again.

Maybe.

Even if it is two upgrades and not one. Even if it requires more time... Even then the free upgrade to Windows 10 should be worth it.

I wonder why Microsoft wants the existing Windows 8 users to be updated to 10 without the user purchasing it. I think we should think why Microsoft is offering this.

Re: Upgrades: When We Microsoft Get This Down ?
@Technocrati: You can't blame MS for being short sighted. Of course there could be complications. What really surprised me was when I upgraded from 7, I was given the illusion that this OS is really powerful and cool and places lots of power in my hands, only to realize later that MS had smartly played me into believing I had power. This OS is as restricted as 8.

The way the market is is that there is always such a major rush to release without making sure the software is reasonably bug-free.

Silicon Valley has always been under pressure to "ship it". The suits demand a ship date, and the developers must get it out the door or get fired.

A lot fo times, testing in real world situations is an afterthought. It's been like that for a long time.

re: Upgrades.

Each night for the last 3 weeks I see that 2 upgrades are being sent to my WIn 7 machine. I had no idea of what they were, or why they were. Finally, I got someone at the upgrade center at MSFT on the phone, and he tells me it's the Win 10 upgrade stuff. They are downloading it  -- I didn't ask for it, but here it is.

Wow -- how long will this last? ABout 2 weeks or so. Really? and they didn't tell their users they were doing this? How silly of them

He asked me if I wanted to upgrade NOW, and I said no thanks. No thanks ever.

MSFT doesn't get the idea of customer service in the least, or keeping the customer informed of what they are planning which will impact your computer.

Almost makes me want to defect to Apple.

While there are plenty of problems with Apple, Windows is worse. Always has been.

It's like Android and iOS. One has more machines using it; but Apple gives a better experience.

Yes, you pay for it. So what?

Ah ha -- thanks for reminding me to check my updates options. For some reason, the bit was flipped to let MSFT control it. I took back control as much as I could, but, they are pushing the WIn 10 upgrade regardless. If we don't allow it, they will evenrtually just push it all down to your machine without asking. They've done that in the past for security stuff.

@shakeeb,

I think Microsoft has come to the conclusion that in order to try to expand it's foot print it needs to provide a cohisant ecosystem, so windows 10 is there vehicle in delivering what consumers have been asking for years.

I don't blame microsoft for pushing folks to Windows 10, and actually support them since I genuinly like windows 10. The fact that it allows for a greater level of integration with dfiferent platforms is great.

Android and iOS have benefitted from this, so hopefully Microsoft has learned to follow suit.

In theory that all sounds great, but with major vendors like Dell and Intel advising their customers to downgrade to Win 8 from 10.

The all-integratable solution has to, you know, work.  ;)

@Shakeeb:

I think Microsoft has a very strong reason to push for Windows 10 upgrades. And thats from eco system perspective. Microsoft has introduced its latest Windows 10 phones in the market. Its company's latest attempt (and sixth I believe) to get into the business of smart phones.

You cant really enjoy the full feature of Windows 10 phone unless you've a Windows 10 OS in your laptop or desktop.

So I believe by pushing for Windows 10 upgrade, Microsoft is actually pushing for Windows Phones.
