It's not the demo-er, it's the demo-gods
To be fair, Azure CTO Russinovich has given repeated demonstrations on the use of Docker on Azure that have worked, including one demonstrating a Linux application running under Hyper-V at DockerCon in San Francisco. It's not the demo-er. It's the demo-gods whose caprices determine connectivity that determine whether you succeed or fail.

New hand at the helm and a major turnaround
Microsoft's biggest advantage, its many applications and technologies that can work both on-premises and in the cloud, can be stood on its head as well. Furture development is heavily open source oriented and until recently, every cloud except Microsoft's showed a great appreciation for and use of open source code. Microsoft understands the potential liability and now emphasizes its willingness to work with open source code as frequently as it can. It's been a major turn around, and one that would not have been poible without Satya Nadella taking the helm.

Azure Cloud
I think the biggest advantage for Microsoft's Azure cloud platform comes from the fact that it belongs to the Microsoft family where already there's a huge range of applications available to integrate with. For instance, putting up Office on the cloud was an instant success. Similarly, for DB applications like SQL Server, if you integrate it with the cloud platform, it becomes one lethal product that has it's own market.
