Re: time and affordability
I think the key point here is what extra value smartphone can add compared to other devices such as smartphone? Will it provide unique capability that smartphone do not have? Will it be tied to smartphone or can be standalone? I feel that there is still space for arguing about the right positioning of smartwatch in the market.

If a smartwatch had better connectivity than a smartphone, would it win out?

Re: time and affordability
I think smartwatches shouldn't replace smartphones, they have different purposes.  In some cases, it can support and enhance your productive.  I wouldn't mind that in some distance future we can have a single device that unifies all our devices, instead of carrying a tablet, a smartwatch and a smartphone.  Whether smartwatches become as common as smartphone is it still too early to tell.

Re: time and affordability
Indeed. I think a big problem with the smartwatch market at the moment is that they are too tied to a product that is within easy reach anyway. If smartwatches are really to take off, they need to replace the smartphone, not just provide minor augmentations.

Re: time and affordability
Good point -- $400 is considered mid-range for a smart phone. If a smartwatch is going to sell at scales to which we are accustomed, it will have to enable a form of functionality that is justifiable at $400. Nevertheless, it will be nice to own a Casio watch again.

time and affordability
It's about time, if you ask me. Perhaps, Timex, Seiko and all the other well known brands will follow. The market for smartwarches is getting very interesting.

Kazuhiro Kashio, Casio's new CEO, told the Wall Street Journal that the watch will be affordable and practical.

I would ask Mr Kashio, in what world $400 is affordable? But then again, these multimillionaires CEOs live in a parallel universe.
