Re: Focus On Business Impact
It is important to understand the business needs. However it is also important to define the scope well.

Focus On Business Impact
In my view I think this is the lacking area. Most of the data analysts don't understand the impact of the data they have. I think it's always better to get the requirement from the business.

Yes.  There is advancing the state of science and advancing the state of science for a company's benefit (competitive advantage).

Re: If the premise of the article is correct...
Exactly. Data Scientist and Data Analysts are two different words having two different meanings but are used interchangeably, which shouldn't be the case. Now with IOT data scientists are required at an R&D level rather than economic level.

Re: If the premise of the article is correct...
It's interesting.  Titles vary from company to company and so do the requirements for what justifies a title.  People tell me they've hired data scientists to help their organizations discover something or improve their understanding of something but at the end of the day if it's a business, its primary goal is to improve its economic state.  People express that differently, e.g., market expansion, revenue growth, understanding customer behavior, improving customer loyalty, identifying potential products, services or ventures, etc.  The science part helps them do this more effectively and science involves exploration but ultimately there has to be a return on the investment.  I've also had people in academia tell me how thrilled they are not to be bound by such contraints.  :-)

If the premise of the article is correct...
...then perhaps we should go back to calling them "data analysts", instead of "data scientists".  The term "scientist" implies that the focus is on understanding, not profit.  Yes, everybody has to make a living, but...
