Some benefits known only to future implementers
It's hard to tick off the full list of container benefits. Some of them are known only to future implementers. But by all means, yes, Tom, containers allow more access to changes in databases and middleware, or the addition of a new data service. Containers allow loosely coupled, distributed applications, with new technologies being added to the application. Each can be put in a container by itself and accessed via the container API.

Re: How containers perform a software update
Are there more benefits to the container approach than freedom from vendor lock-in? I'd guess that containers also allow companies to be more responsive to technology changes in things like databases and middleware.

How containers perform a software update
I'm over simplifying how Linux containers can perform an update. Containers are built in layers of software files, with application logic as one layer, database connection another, application server another, etc. One of these layers can be selected for a targeted update, but all the layers that come after it must also be re-installed. So if you're updating layer 17 out of 20, you'll reload 17-20 rather than touching a single layer. With a tip of the hat to my friends at Docker for an explanation on that point.
