@zerox203, the conflict that I kept hearing about is the one between employees who want to use the myriad communication systems they're accustomed to and an IT department trying to figure out how to support it all. If the IT department had its way, there would be one hardware platform, one software version, and one tool that everyone in the organization uses. Why? Because it's simpler and simple translates into lower costs and greater certainty.

One of the things I brought up in a "thought leader round table" is that executives have been guilty of giving different incentives to different groups: Often, the incentives are at cross purposes to one another. As long as individual employees and groups are given goals and incentives based on their specific work results, people are going to choose the tools that allow them to reach their goals -- whether that means working with IT or around it.

Tom, it's interesting that you say that: One of the major thrusts of the unified communications products we saw at this Enterprise Connect were "virtual huddle spaces" -- electronic versions of the corners where you go when someone comes by and grabs you at your desk for a quick meeting. The assumption from just about everyone is that when you're at work you're simply biding time between collaborative interruptions. I'm not sure they've got the balance precisely right on that human-factors equation, yet.

Too unified?
