Re: Data
I think Susan's idea about something like ASCAP for data would be a great middle ground. Facebook, et. al. could still use our data, but they'd just have to cut us in for a percentage of what they make off of us. I'd be very happy to take 10 percent!

Re: Data
That does sound like some weird Goodfellas like protection racket right?

I like the idea of at least getting paid for my data, though if we go down that road then the likes of Facebook and others would probably need to consider charging for their service, as otherwise they couldn't make the money they do now from adverts.

I'd still rather they didn't collect it in the first place though.

Re: Data
@Gary_EL: you bet, Drew is really onto something here. How do we get this off the ground? We could model it after the music business performing rights organizations like ASCAP and BMI who monitor how many times  a song is played and then provide royalty checks to the songwriters. We can start an association that monitors how many times our data is sold and then provide us with royalty checks each time a compnay uses our info.

Re: Data
@[email protected]: In any other situation that would be known as extortion or paying "protection" money. It seems the same rules don't apply when it comes to Internet data.

Re: Data
I like this - let's cut out the middleman! Let the companies who want my data buy it directly from - ME!

Data
Its surprising if someone asks you to pay him else they will get hold of your data ? Wow ! Firstly you are using my data and then you are asking for money to stop tracking me. Is it really legal ?
