Re: What VMware's up to
When I hear IT leaders talk about hybrid clouds, they're generally talking about connecting private and public clouds. Most aren't doing that very much, and certainly not a lot of dynamic switching between them, but that's the concept I hear usually when discussing hybrid.

Re: What VMware's up to
Thank for the update, Charlie. This is the same messsage Gelsinger had at VMworld last summer, just with new details about products, etc. The ideas behind it certainly make sense and leveraging the infrastruture using virtualization and cloud is where IT is going. The question for enterprises is whether they want to go all in with VMware and pay VMware prices, I think.

Geoffrey Moore says virtualization is Crossing the Chasm
Geoffrey Moore, author of Crossing the Chasm, was a member of a panel at VMware's event yesterday. He pointed out that "disrupters" release trapped value somewhere in a mechanism or process of an industry. The PC revolution released the trapped value of Intel computing chips and the appetite for computing among end users. Virtualization released the trapped value of an x86 server, which had the power to run multiple applications but was typically running one. "When trapped value gets released, it will disrupt (an industry) quickly because it wants to escape," he said Feb.2. The emerging virtualization of networks and storage will release more trapped value, he implied.

What VMware's up to
Another way that Gelsinger attempted to sum up what VMware is up to is moving the discussion of management off the infrastructure and onto the running application. What is it's performance? How well are the network and storage supporting it? Should it be assigned more of the latter? Does it need to scale due to increased traffic? Gelsinger is saying, manage the application through the virtualization management console; we'll manage the compute, network and storage infrastructure.
