@Thomas- It is true, you would no longer be cheering for a driver You'd be cheering for teams of engineers. But I don't think that would be an issue if it was visually interesting enough. 700 mph races seem visually interesting to me.

As someone said about sports, we're just cheering for laundry. The players don't live in the city they represent. They don't care about it specifically. NASCAR drivers also don't represent a sponsor. People have been willing to watch robots fight, I don't think the skill of the driver is the important factor.

While I fully support your idea, I'm not sure I get it: How do individual pod racers show their skill if they're just weight propelled by pressurized air? A closed system like the hyperloop wouldn't really be well-suited for racing, or so it seems to me.
