Re: Boxever marks increased intereational capabilities in software
"I don't think there's a magic number for continuous delivery -- we must be doing X number of deployments a day, or we're not good enough."

@Chris: I think the pressure towards being efficient is there and will always be there. Companies want to recover their investments and for that it's always important to achieve a certain minimum scale of operations. However, this is a tricky situation. The pressure towards achieving that scale can result in a compromise on the quality part. Especially, during the early stages it is important to ensure quality of your services regardless of the nature of your delivery.

Re: Whatever, Boxever
"When I buy a flight ticket, the last thing on my mind is that my personal itinerary will be bought/sold/traded in order to hawk more products to me.  "

@asksqn: Even if you get to know this and you realize that this done to create more efficiency and give you a lower price for your ticket, would you mind your itenerary being traded? I doubt most people would barely care.

Whatever, Boxever
>>Boxever collects data on traveler details from client airlines -- where travelers are going, when they will arrive, who they are traveling with, what they will do upon arrival -- and deduces from that whether it's a business trip, a family trip, or a personal vacation.<<

Funny how the consumer is never notified of such privacy invading tactics.  When I buy a flight ticket, the last thing on my mind is that my personal itinerary will be bought/sold/traded in order to hawk more products to me.

Continuous delivery equals spontaneous delivery?
Continuous delivery might also be known by the name spontaneous delivery, although some would say it lacks gravitas. It's the ability to update a production system when it needs it, not according to a regular schedule or after a long list of approvals have been obtained.

I concur with you Chris. I have worked in Financial Services IT for over 205 years and I believe the requirement for stability and uptime appears to trump updated functionality in the Financial Services realm

Sounds Like DevOps but...
"Boxever is constantly changing its software to take advantage of new data or new ways of looking at the data. It makes changes to production systems daily through an automated unit test system, automated regression testing, and then "one-click deployment" to production by an administrator."

This sure sounds like DevOps, but I would be very interested to learn more about what tools they use, what the split of Developer to Operations personnel looks like and how long it took to get from start to where they are today.

I read lots of articles about DevOps and nobody really gets into the nitty gritty about the details of what it takes to make DevOps happen.

Re: Boxever marks increased intereational capabilities in software
I don't think there's a magic number for continuous delivery -- we must be doing X number of deployments a day, or we're not good enough. The goal should be if there's a business advantage to be gained by making changes more often, IT has to find a way to deliver it. I've heard financial services CIOs say there's just no way they're going to continuous deployment, given the regulatory requirements and the consequences for downtime. But they are trying to shorten that time to deployment.
