Cloud security is important, and I can see that both Box and Dropbox are going to be competing against each other for the best mix of products and features for a long time. I think one of the best things they could do is link into private clouds, although I'm not sure companies like VMware waould be too happy about something like that.

File storage and seamless access across multiple devices is a strength in services like Box and Dropbox. If they don't play well with the other applications that may need to access or utilize the files, that's a negative. The API route is a way to expand the likely audience for their services because you are getting more features with tighter integration. Big win for enterprises needed to manage a growing number of shadow IT sites and services.

Secure file sharing
I think that by building in API systems that help make file sharing more secure we should see an increase in uptake from enterprises in using these types of services because it helps reduce a lot of threats that come with traditional file sharing.  I'm curious to see how advanced these types of API integrations plan to go, perhaps talking with SIEMs who can help validate the type of data being stored in these shares to cut down even more on data loss risks.
