It seems to me that Picasso's famous quote about computers -- computers are useless, they can only give you answers -- could be applied equally to analytics.

Analytics has not been the province of the CIO
Agree with you for the most part, Chris, but the one point I would make is that the CIO has not been, for the most part, the owner of analytic competence. The CIO is responsible for ensuring that the data that fuels analytics is well managed and well govered, but most of the analytics (and even BI) execs I talk to report up through the business. In the big data/internet-of-things era, the job of managing the data and supporting infrastructure gets bigger, but CIO's will need their partnering skills to support the analytical work. Here's where being able to understand and be a part of the business will be crucial, as the analytics pros are invariably embedded in the business units.

Chief Digital Officer in addition to, not instead of, the CIO
Creating a Chief Digital Officer role may be worthwhile for an organization that needs to invest in creating digital goods, making them good looking and consumer friendly, and getting them out the door. Many firms need more outward facing digital savvy, but that doesn't mean they don't also need the inward focus on reliable, well-architected systems and innovation from within the organization, working on systems that customers will never see directly.

Some CIOs will be able to ware both hats, in the bimodal IT style Gartner has been talking up. But even where the CDO role is carved out as a separate one, the CIO's job will be to be sure the new digital services introduced are not only sexy but solid.
