Maybe that's Plan B if the whole setup doesn't sell. I imagine it also has to to with the operation being on the complex side, and it's always easier to control the entire hardware/software ecosystem.

The thing I can't figure out is why it doesn't make sense to sell just the Illuminator and mat as PC peripherals, rather than grafting them onto a PC permanently. It may work as marketing but I have trouble seeing the practical advantages of this approach.

Could parts be scanned and brought into the advanced modeling software that engineers use, like SurfaceWorks? That would be very cool.

And, with 3D, clearly the biz to be in is not just the hardware, but the materials used to make items. HP learned that lesson with the inkjet.

Not a bad move after the break up
When HP split its PC/printer and software businesses, I think it reinforced for a lot of people that HP weathered some bumpy roads during the PC slump. Introducing a genuinely novel concept isn't a bad way to start the post-break up period.

Interesting point re HP needing great apps that take advantage of this unusual PC. You can see the image/video editing possibilities. What else comes to mind, readers?
