And, besides being good/lucky, they have legs because VMware's embrace of Docker means it's highly likely to be the de facto standard containerization system in the enterprise.

Anyone standardizing on Docker is in a position to offer both Linux and Windows container management, since it's being engineered to recognize and handle Microsoft's version of Windows containers. In varying degrees, that includes Red Hat's OpenShift, Engine Yard, WaveMaker and Active State Stacklato today, and will eventually include Pivotal's Cloud Foundry and the .net-oriented Apprenda, all platform-as-a-service providers. But Stack Engine's timing is either good or lucky. It's showing up with a narrowly-focused container management system, as opposed to a tool and development process-oriented PaaS, as interest in Docker and its potential peaks.
