Effective business model but illegal
Kristin, I won't say that such fake likes are not useful. If I am a genuine customer, I will be interested in visiting a brand's page with 10,000 likes that offers a product I am interested in. The business model of "likes" for money is tempting; legality is another aspect.

Re: How big is the FB site integrity engineer's investigative staff?
I see commercial on TV about a company who build Facebook pages for others and also try to create a buzz on their page.  People are paid to do anything these days.  A company should think twice when they get a lot of likes on Facebook; it may not be from the people they are interested in getting it from.

How big is the FB site integrity engineer's investigative staff?
It's going to take more than one Facebook site integrity engineer to convince me that digital reality has anything to do with real likes and dislikes. How big is his investigative staff? I hope it rivals the headcount of the National Railway of India (the country's largest employer). He's going to need it.

Re: Fakes
I would go so far as to say that the term "fake Like" is a redundant.

Re: Fakes
You can buy or rent just about anything these days.  Facebook may be able to police this but I've seen on Taskrabbit or Fiverr where you can pay people a couple bucks to like your page or website or tweet something about you.  If you have the means, there is always a way and the creative types will always find a workaround.

Fakes
I was just discussing the concept of fake Yelp reviews. This seems like more of the same, something ethical business owners could get burned by. If a business thought a competitor was paying for Likes, is there some action they can take?

" that claim to do something that alters your Facebook experience, such as seeing who's viewed your profile, "

That's just what LinkedIn offers as enticement to get people to sign up for its premium service.
