Curt, it varies from office to office but at the very least they know which regulations US companies need to be aware based on their experiences. @obrienjw  Thanks for a great show today and next up is Big Data Streams and Advanced Analytics in session 5.

@obrienjw, I know that the embassies and trade delegations in different countries can be rich sources of knowledge on topics like import/export and payment systems: Are they also pretty good when it comes to international data issues?

Strategist

Curt, most companies have a security and compliance office that I start with for absolute requirements.  Data owners and stewards are typically a good next step as they are active within the industry and have experience from past companies.  For international concerns beyond what the compliance knows, I do reach out to U.S. embassies in those countries as they directly me to foreign government agencies. @obrienjw

To me, one of the most important things John has talked about today is the requirement for policies on what NOT to keep and when to throw away what you save. I've seen a lot of companies that ignore both of those: It typically takes a lawsuit involving a lawyer who has a good nose for discovery to show them the error of their ways.

Strategist

John, is there a good way to figure out how to reconcile conlicting regulations and laws regarding (for example) privacy among the various international jurisdictions?

Hi all -Audio is live! If you don't see the audio bar at the top of the screen, please refresh your browser. It may take a couple tries. When you see the audio bar, if it doesn't start automatically, hit the play button. If you experience audio interruptions and are using IE, try using FF or Chrome as your browser. Many people experience issues with IE. Also, make sure your flash player is updated with the current version. Some companies block live audio streams, so if that is the case for your company, the class will be archived on this page immediately following the class and you can listen then. People don't experience any issues with the audio for the archived version.

Hi Curt, I'm online and ready present today's topic on Regulatory Compiance and Privacy Protection. @obrienjw

Hey, everyone, we're glad you could join us! When the show is scheduled to start, at 2:00 p.m. EDT, an audio player should appear above the "Your Post" window. If it doesn't appear, you might need to refresh your browser until it does. If it appears but doesn't start playing, then you may need to click on the "play" button on the far left of the player.
