Re: Mix is a mess
@Richard,

That's unfortunate. Thanks for sharing your experience. I haven't used Mix very much, but I've generally found the Office team's recent efforts to be pretty strong. Hopefully they've worked out/ are working out any bugs.

Re: Any help is good help
@david,

Absolutely. Even if some of these education programs are inherently self-serving on the tech companies' parts, I think it's great that strong tech resources are available to more students. Google, Microsoft, Apple, whatever-- great for students to get access to tech tools.

Mix is a mess
Tried to install Microsoft Mix twice over a period of several months and it failed to work on my system.

It froze up so badly I had to do a restore because it kept freezing up the whole computer. I think there are still bugs so beware.

Based from everyone's comments.  Microsoft should really worry.  There are different  alternatives which meet the needs of people.  Before, it was just Microsoft and office.  I think Microsoft lead as the  dominant force of the PC market led it go its head and was unable to see how competitors will react.

And the ease with which Chromebooks can be managed counts for a lot. Both of my daughters have Chromebooks at home because it's too much work to do IT support for multiple traditional computers.

Google Apps has become an easy way to make assignments, turn in homework, etc. I am seeing it in action myself. Google has already established quite a foothold in K-12 schools.

Microsoft is dead right that this is a threat. Schools can't use a platform that only some kids can acess/afford, so Google Apps is an easy default choice. I know my own kids like Office, but they're using Google Apps on Chromebooks in their classrooms, and to access and file assignments from teachers at home. It builds familiarity young.

Any help is good help
I am of the mind that it really does not matter where the help is coming from so long as the help is coming from somewhere. Naturally there is an issue with product placement, but any help from these big companies has to be good regardless of how we feel about Apple, Google or Microsoft.
