I can't imagine someone being on a cell phone conversation for multiple hours.  Certainly, anything that lasted a lengthy period of time right next to me could be frustrating, but I'm not going to begrudge someone 5-10 minutes on their phone as long as they're not shouting.

More problematic are the screaming children, as well as the adults who half-shout at each other across the aisle.

Maybe a good solution is this: Children and people who want to have conversations in the back, people who want to be able to talk on their phones in the middle, and everyone who just wants some piece and quiet in the front.

@SachinEE: For my own part, I definitely would not necessarily want a stranger to pay undue attention to me on a plane or other public transit.  I've no problem with them whipping out the old iPhone or Android then.  :p

You've got to admit the cartoonist has a dark sense of humour. We should see this as a possibility of sensor marketing where sensors would not allow on board call unless its an emergency.

Heavy cellphone addicts should be on the temporary no-flying list because using cellphones on a flight causes many problems, both technical and non technical. For technical, the electronics may be damaged due to the smartphones. For non technical, we use the term "being bored" when one person is busy on their smartphones and not paying attention to us.

@Joe:  You don't get it what is so annoying about non stop chattering?

Here's a suggestion.  Next time you book a cross country flight, be sure to find either a very chatty seatmate OR an infant aged 4-6 months and then report back to us how you don't grasp the "antipathy" towards sources of non stop noise annoyance while being trapped next to them for 6 hours or longer.

No doubt the "I'm on the plane" folks are rather silly, but I don't get the antipathy toward public cellphone use; it's no different in terms of how it affects others than carrying on a face-to-face conversation in public.  I think people only hate public cellphone talkers because they can't hear the other side of the conversation.

About time
It seems like allowing mobile phones to be used on flights was a foregone conclusion. There's simply too many devices, with two many new technologies to test every plane out with every single one of them. It would require so much testing to prove we were going to have to just accept them and hope nothing goes wrong.
