@Charlie: It sounds like there are a great deal of challenges for IT to overcome before desktop virtualization can be an effective option. IN addition to what you've noted in your comments here, Eschenbach also says: It's not just virtual desktops. It's how you manage desktops, how you deploy applications, how you manage mobile devices.

What advice do you have for IT professionals who are considering desktop virtualization?

VMworld moves
Virtualized, separate work and personal environments on a mobile device like a tablet continue to make a lot of sense to me. Let's see what VMware does next with the Airwatch technology.

Still, that's a darn big "if" -- end users dislike VDI. Do you think that the future of 'virtual desktops' is in a browser?

VMware has invested heavily and is pushing hard to make sure that if desktops are virtualized,they're virtualized under VMware. Other companies have solve one or more pieces of the puzzle but it's been hard for any firm to make much headway. The cost has remained high. Flash memory helps produce hundreds and thousands of desktops when demand for them is highest at the start of the workday. Eschenbach said the cost of a virtual desktop is no longer higher than the total cost of ownership of a conventional Windows desktop.
