Look! Even more data to drown in
Given that there are patients that mismanage their medical conditions  (diabetes, hypertension, etc.) I don't actually see a portal having any kind of meaning for patients other than as a passing novelty.  Further, accessing one's own patient records (before the me-too EHR bandwagon came along) had all the chance of happening as an act of Congress to help hardworking Americans (instead of their corporate friends).

making patient portal more engaging
I completelly agree with this article. If patient portals are to become an important part of the patient -physician relationship they ought to provide services which engage patients to their use.  At this time, most patient portals are static.  By providing information about their appointment or other features to help them navigate the health system, they would in turn use them regularly.
