OK, ye we are in definite agreement. i have actually written on several occasions that IT will be out of teh business of the datacenter in 5 - 10 years. i think i have an article on IW that discusses that. i wrote that a few years ago, while my earlier predictions was that there would be no need ofr on-premises anything, i find myself having to revise that statement A LITTLE. i still think that overall public clouds will win this battle no question in my mind, BUT, i now believe that a subset of an organization's most valuable assets will remain on-premises.

If you take the Zynga example as a model for the conversation, they satrted off 100% on AWS and then pulled back in some high valued assets. they also had some challenegs that they can overcome better internally. Sure, public clouds will get better, but i think solutions like Nebula and VMware's upcoming Marvin will server enterprise IT in maintaining an on-premises footprint for high valued assets.

Personally, i think security is exagerated, i am willing to wager that public cloud security is significantly better than the best run enterprise IT environment, but that opens up padora's box :)

Elias, I meant the comment in general to all private clouds. I think as more and more attributes get built into the public cloud -- what if they get really good at security in depth and keep their security technologies closely interlocked, thanks to the more or less uniform environment they have to manage -- then their economies of scale will prompt more and more legacy data center conversion to the public cloud. Nebula has a particularly compact and neatly comfigured private cloud package.

Charlie, i am very intrigued with your reply. Could you elaborate a bit on how you arrived at that conclusion? and are your comments directed at the Nebula solution or at private cloud deployments in general regardless of make and model? if it's the latter there is some truths to it that all private cloud solutions including Nebula require additional orchestration tools an dintegration with software like Chef, puppet and others. They also would require significant process improvement and service catalog discipline in order to deliver that level of user experience. The advantage that public cloud has over private cloud deployments is that their scale and their discipline, their well defined processes and the fact that that's what they do.

If your comments are just for Nebula then i am really intrigued, please share

Private Nebula vs. public cloud

Nebula "levels the playing field with these massive public cloud providers because it empowers IT to offer a similar service with a similar user experience." Agreed, it offers a similar user experience. with self provisioning, orchestration. Disagree, that it can do so with similar price/performance to a public cloud, which uses that software across many customers.

Nebula and hybrid

Does the Nebula system have specific hooks to help IT teams that want to set up a hybrid service, perhaps running a retail web app in the public cloud but shifting customers inside the private cloud when they're ready to check out? And if so, does it favor clouds like IBM Softlayer or Rackspace that are OpenStack?
