Don't Darwinize Yourself Alert
Smart app for dumb people. It really is astonishing to me that anyone needs to be reminded to look up while texting, or that it happens in transit in the first place, but then I see numerous pedestrians crossing the street at busy intersections completely oblivious to oncoming traffic. This feature should be nicknamed the Don't Darwinize Yourself Alert.

Re: if only
@Thomas> That is exactly my reaction. If we need an app to tell us to look where we're going (especially when next to roads), then there's no hope for the human race and perhaps we should let Darwin do his evil work.

Now, more interesting would be if there were any evolutionary evidence to suggest that humans were developing a second set of eyes about 2 inches further up the forehead. This way the head could be looking down a phone while walking (with the primary legacy eyes scanning the phone screen) while the newly evolved Next Generation Eyes (Eyes 2.0) can keep an eye on the environment ahead of us and send us a text message when we're about to do something phenomenally stupid.

I say this as somebody who opened a door this morning to go into the YMCA, and a lady who had been standing just inside the door doing something on her phone, without so much as looking up, stepped across and walked out of it. I stood there with my mouth open that she hadn't even checked to see who had opened the door and who was therefore coming through in the other direction. I guess I should be glad I was not in a wheelchair and was able to step swiftly aside, or I'd probably have had somebody falling all over me...

if only
Wouldn't it be nice if an app could save us from our own stupidity? I'll believe it when I see it.
