When does 'preferred' become actual cloud use?
There is nothing in the report that tells us whether those surveyed were actual cloud users. If you interviewed a bunch of mainframe, WebSphere, DB2 and CICS users who do not yet use a cloud provider, who would their "preferred" provider be? If the survey was more scientific than that, tell me so and how it was done somewhere in the report. In a query to IDC, I was assured it was not an IBM or vendor financed report. I like IDC information in general and have confidence in its independence. But I lean toward skepticism on this one.

Cisco? Really?
Of all the things in this article, the most surprising to me is Cisco's high position. I talk to lots of vendors in IT about cloud, and I don't think I've ever heard a single one mention a Cisco cloud. Granted my experience is inherently anecdotal, but it makes me feel uncomfortable about the other conclusions.

Data manipulation 101
To me this is key: "The main question was carefully worded to ask what surveyed buyers would "prefer" in an IaaS provider, not who they were actually using as a cloud vendor."

Not to discount the value of a familiar brand or these companies' cloud plans, but that essentially prompts respondents to fill in the names of their preferred incumbent vendors, regardless of whether these vendors have top-notch cloud offerings.

Did IDC also ask what IaaS providers are actually in use? Or whether respondents know anything about the offerings from IBM, Cisco, etc.?
