I've been under people so bent on maintaining their ego and the egos of their favorites that they took steps that were clearly not in the best interest of the comp;anies.

Outsourcing strategy
The debate over outsourcing -- GM's insourcing versus this increased outsourcing by Chrysler -- will continue, you're right, because IT leaders aren't being paid to provide cookie-cutter IT strategy. They're paid to look at what a company needs and deliver the IT that fits that business strategy.

I remembered while writing this that I had seen a "60 Minutes" feature on Marchionne two years ago and was impressed by the man. He appears so laid back, but he's laser focused. Chrysler would probably have died if he hadn't taken a chance on them.

Management By Fiat
My brother worked for CNH (Case New Holland), Fiat's agricultural equipment manufacturing business, for many years and wasn't terribly impressed with Fiat's management style. In fact, he worked in IT and may have parted ways with the company in part due to outsourcing to the likes of IBM. But that was long ago...

In recent years I have heard only good things about Fiat, particularly CEO Sergio Marchionne, who has really turned Fiat and Chrysler around. Marchionne is a real-deal, hands-on car guy. I've talked to Chrysler employees who love him. They actually worry about him because he chain smokes and works like a dog, constantly travelling and getting deeply involved in design and manufacturing decisions. He also deflects attention and accolades and knows that humility and hard work are the keys to getting ahead. The minute you let your head get too big it's all over. That's a lesson tech vendor CEOs would do well to learn.
