One of the interesting questions about the rise of the cloud is "what happens to the systems administrators"?  Because fundamentally what you're able to do with the cloud is to automate a whole lot of what sysadmins traditionally do, and it's better/cheaper/faster/more stable/more repeatable/less fragile.

 

I think the jury's still out on exactly what happens with sysadmins, and most of the companies that help enable this cloud automation/orchestration argue that it won't cause anyone to lose a job ("sysadmins will just do more strategic tasks than rote ones"), but that's what they should say politically.  I'm personally of the mind that we will need fewer sysadmins in the future, but I'm not exactly sure how many fewer.  We may find that the sysadmin of today is the DevOps developer/engineer of tomorrow, and it just requires a slightly different skillset, but not necessarily a different skill level--and probably does come with better pay.
