A lot of the grumbling that I see about the cloud from enterprise developers and IT departments stem from not understanding how you get the benefits of the cloud, and that's mostly about changing application architecture paradigms.  But even without changing all of those paradigms, the cloud still has a lot to offer around IT automation--but the problem is that you will likely have less performant applications (because VMs are inferior to bare metal) and you will likely have less fault-tolerant / less reliable applications (because cloud VMs are not built to survive failure on an individual-VM-level as well as a standalone machine)
