MCI WorldCom today reported first-quarter net income of $709 million, or 36 cents a share. In the same period last year, the company posted profit of $191 million, or 10 cents a diluted share. MCI WorldCom revenue climbed 15% to $8.32 billion, from $7.25 billion last year.
Voice revenue rose 7.4% from a year ago to $5.1 billion, and data-services revenue rose almost 31% to $1.7 billion. Internet revenue soared 60% from a year ago to $758 million. Revenue from international operations climbed 55% to $375 million.
President and CEO Bernard Ebbers refused to comment on reports that MCI WorldCom is interested in acquiring wireless carrier Nextel Communications Inc. "We will definitely look at opportunities that will make this company successful over a long period of time," Ebbers told analysts.
