Malaysia Is The Latest To Test Qualcomm's MediaFlo

The trial will feature 25 live content channels and test Clipcasting media, a short-format video content service that can be viewed on mobile devices after it has been stored.

Qualcomm's MediaFlo mobile entertainment platform will be tested in Malaysia by Maxis Communications Berhad and the Astro All Asia Network, the three firms announced Thursday.

The trial is expected to begin in the fall and will feature 25 live content channels from Astro. Also to be included in the trial is a test of Clipcasting media, a short-format video content service that can be viewed on mobile devices after it has been stored.

The companies indicated a successful trial of MediaFlo would result in a commercial deployment of mobile broadcasting services on Maxis' cellular network next year.

"We will assess the business and technical performance of MediaFlo and the promise of a compelling user experience with easy access and fast channel switching," said Jon Eddy Abdullah, chief operating officer of Maxis, in a statement. Maxis offers UMTS wireless, fixed, and international network services in Malaysia.

As a cross-media operator, Astro offers direct-to-home satellite multichannel television services in Malaysia and Brunei. Astro has a broad range of offerings in printed media, commercial radio, and operates the world's largest Chinese film library as well, the firm said, noting that it has direct-to-home market penetration of more than 36% in Malaysia.

"We expect that this trial will confirm MediaFlo's network capacity and user experience, complementing the large and varied content menu we currently offer our two million pay TV subscribers in Malaysia," said Graham Stephens, Astro's chief technology officer, in a statement.

In recent years, Qualcomm has tested MediaFlo in different international markets including the U.K. and Taiwan; Verizon Wireless launched a nationwide MediaFlo service in 2005.
