Making Data Warehouses More Flexible

Warehouses are good, but they need to adapt to changing conditions.

Data warehouses are notoriously difficult to adapt to changing circumstances, such as when a company buys or sells a business unit. Next month, Kalido Group, a spin-off of Royal Dutch/Shell Group, will ship a new version of its data warehouse software with new data-modeling and -management capabilities designed to make the warehouses more flexible and adaptable.

Kalido Dynamic Information Warehouse version 7 has new data-modeling functions and the ability to synchronize reference data. That, according to Kalido, lets managers change warehouse designs to conform to new business models or corporate structures without having to changes data schemas, a labor-intensive chore.

The new capabilities also make it easier to view data from multiple perspectives, such as looking at a company's sales data from both departmental and corporate levels. With most data warehouses today, information must be converted to new formats when it's "rolled up" to the corporate level. "That conversion work is a hassle," says AMR Research analyst Peter Urban.

Other new features include Internet-based remote management and support for the latest Java 2 Enterprise Edition and Web-services standards. Kalido expects to ship the software in June. Pricing for a single installation begins at $300,000.
