LogMeIn To Launch Remote Support Software For Smartphones

A preview is available next month initially for the Palm Treo 700w/wx.

LogMeIn, which offers remote connectivity and support tools for PCs, plans to introduce next month software that does the same thing for smartphones.

Announced Thursday, the software called Rescue Mobile lets customer-service reps at wireless carriers and IT support organizations access and control smartphones so they can diagnose and fix problems.

LogMeIn's latest software-as-a-service offering is the latest in a family of IT support services. The latest release will recreate a replica of the smartphone user interface on a technician's computer screen, giving him full access to the device's functions.

"For carriers and support organizations, this will significantly reduce the time and cost associated with supporting increasingly complex devices," Michael Simon, chief executive of LogMeIn, said in a statement released Thursday. "For users, it reduces the frustration associated with the configuration and support of a handset that they may otherwise give up on and return."

The LogMeIn software enables technicians to access and control PCs and smartphones from a single console. An applet must first be downloaded before the device or computer can be accessed.

LogMeIn Rescue Mobile is expected to be available for preview next month. The service will work only on smartphones running the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system. The preview is available initially for the Palm Treo 700w/wx. Subsequent versions will support the Symbian and Blackberry operating systems.

Pricing for the service was not disclosed. However, LogMeIn offers its basic remote access for PCs for free, and charges for a premium service that enables users to move and organize files between machines. Competitors include GoToMyPC, and Laplink Everywhere.
