VertiCity.com Inc. has launched an online marketplace that takes IT recruitment international. VertiCity's site is a marketplace for IT skills that draws half of its talent from low-wage, high-skill countries such as Pakistan, Russia, India, and China.
The company's selling point is to provide international IT skills for less than it would cost for U.S. companies to hire locally, says Jeff Mason, VertiCity's CEO and chairman. At the site, companies can enter reverse auctions for entire IT projects or hire individuals for particular projects.
Companies finding a VertiCity consultant overseas can expect to pay an average of about $1,200 per month to hire an IT professional who has at least a college degree in computer science and two years of experience, Mason says. If a company makes a VertiCity consultant a permanent employee, it pays VertiCity a fee equal to 30% of the employee's first-year salary and agrees to sponsor that employee for an H-1B work visa.
Early users of the auction service have used it primarily for Web design, code conversion, or application integration. Those bidding for posted projects must fill out a profile to participate in auctions. Once projects are done, the hiring company rates the contracted company.
Many companies are already looking offshore to outsource projects, giving VertiCity a critical edge against domestic-focused competitors such as HotJobs.com Ltd. and EarthWeb Inc., says Sam Albert, president of IT consulting firm Sam Albert Associates. "The IT space is one that workers worldwide are aspiring to, and this is creating global centers of competence in places like India and Russia in particular. Soon, it won't make a difference where you were born."
