Cartoon: Unstructured Data Fatigue

It's been a long hard day in the data mines.

Brian Moore is a cartoonist and illustrator. His first brush with the world of IT was a very part-time gig applying software patches on a TRS-80 Model III. The patches were about four lines long and arrived in the mail, typed on letterhead. He has since moved on to computers ... View Full Bio

Re: Unstructured Data Fatigue
I like this one - the source of the humor here is pretty subtle. The expression is 'it's funny because it's true', and that's certainly the case here. Exactly how and why our workday leaves us exhausted has changed quite a lot, and those of us in IT might have a little trouble finding sympathy from those at home that don't even know what we're talking about. Combine that with the sometimes-nasty home-life balance brought on by the age of the constant connection, and well... it's a nice to know we're not alone, at any rate.

Programming used to be a source of great creative joy for me. It still is, but it's a little different now. I have deadlines to meet, people to answer to when I mess up, and it's frustrating when something I'm supposed to enjoy is the thing keeping me away from things I'd rather be enjoying. Once in a while I have second thoughts if it was really a wise move to turn that into a job. Thanks for lightening the mood, Brian!
