Verizon Roadmap Is Android Heavy

Android fever has hit Verizon Wireless, which is reportedly preparing to launch several Android-powered devices including the Motorola Droid Pro and the LG enV Touch 2.

A Verizon Wireless spokeswoman declined to confirm the phones’ release, saying “We don’t pre-announce our phones.”

However, a leaked roadmap detailing the carrier’s plans for the rest of 2010 and further down the road reveal the Droid Pro may see possible release in November, as well as another Motorola device in the works that will run Android 2.2, according to website Boy Genius Report.

The Droid Pro will reportedly have a 1.3 GHz CPU, a 4-inch screen and global roaming capabilities, thanks to a GSM/HSPA radio.

Earlier this month the Motorola Droid 2 was launched by the carrier for $199.99 after a mail-in rebate with a new two-year contract. It has a QWERTY keyboard, a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, and a TI OMAP 1GHz processor with dedicated GPU.

The Droid 2 is also expected to have a 5-megapixel camera with DVD video recording, and 8GB of internal memory, which can be expanded through a microSD memory card slot that supports cards of up to 32GB (an 8GB card pre–installed). The Droid 2 also has 3G mobile hotspot capabilities, Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, Skype Mobile, Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi connectivity, according to various reports.

The LG enV Touch 2 smartphone is expected to have a clamshell design and dual touchscreens on both the outside and inside of the device, as well as a QWERTY keyboard.

It will reportedly run Android 2.1, but possibly be upgraded to 2.2 for release around the holidays, and will be a global device. On the downside, the phone is said to be large and heavy, according to BGR and Engadget. The enV brand has traditionally been marketed by Verizon as a feature phone, but the move to Android might signal that the Touch 2 will be a high-end device. An LG spokeswoman said they don’t have any further details right now.

In addition, HTC and Samsung are also reportedly working on Android devices and tablets. Samsung’s reported Android tablet will have a 7-inch screen and front-facing camera, the roadmap claims, while Motorola’s will have a 10-inch screen and either a 1 GHz or 1.3 GHz CPU and front-facing camera.

The Motorola device may be running Android 3.0, which could delay its released to sometime around February 2011.
