The Rise Of The Gadget Blogs

I love a good blog that covers gadgets well. I consider myself something of a gadget-blog collector and connoisseur and would like to share with you some of my favorites.

The list has to start with the two everything-including-the- kitchen-sink blogs, Gizmodo and Engadget. They're really good at highlighting the newest-of-the-new stuff. And although they include some off-topic stories, their content is mostly gadgets and toys. You won't be disappointed.

The I4U site, edited by Manfred Lugmayr, and Dottocomu are great sources of breaking news from the wild and woolly world of Japanese electronics. They do veer into software, but I won't hold that against them.

Most gadget freaks have heard of the venerable Gadgeteer Web site, which features reviews and more on all kinds of toys. But few follow the excellent gadget blogs written by the Gadgeteer editors, Julie and Judie.

One of the most popular blogs few people have heard of is The Red Ferret Journal, which is written anonymously by a UK-based technology journalist. The Ferret is brilliant at finding gadgets that are't new, but that you also don't know about. It's quite a feat.

Text messaging and camera phone enthusiasts will love Textually.org and Picturephoning.com, which are produced by Emily Turrettini and Cyril Fivet. They cover pretty much all breaking news about the consumer use of SMS and camera phones in the global mainstream media.

And if those are not focused narrowly enough for you, try Wrist Fashion, an entire blog devoted to crazy and exotic wristwatch gadgets.

All these blogs are about new products — in other words, what to buy — and prototype technologies still in the labs. But do-it-yourselfers will love Hack-a-Day and Mini-ITX.com, two blogs that focus on modifying or building utterly unique hardware. Warnings: Hack-a-Day basically tells you how to have fun voiding your warranties, and Mini-ITX mainly explores modding with its own brand of small PC components.

Saving what I hope is the best for last, I would like to introduce you to the newest gadget blog in town — the one you're reading now. If you're a blog enthusiast like me, please bookmark the site and come back and see what's new every day. I can't predict what new technology and incredible products you'll read about here. But I can promise you surprises, insight, and a shameless enthusiasm for the newest and coolest gadgets, both available and forthcoming.
