Storage Technology Corp. disclosed plans Thursday to acquire Storability Software, a storage-management software vendor. The two have worked closely in the past, and StorageTek had already purchased one of Storability's facilities.

Storability's products are designed to help businesses get better utilization out of their storage resources with storage-resource-management software. Called Global Storage Manager, the software is designed to help rein in storage system sprawl, and can help businesses cut back on unnecessary storage purchases and administrative costs.

StorageTek has decades of experience helping companies archive and secure data. The leading vendor of tape libraries also has expertise in helping large companies manage heterogeneous servers and storage as one network.

Mike Fisch, a storage analyst at Clipper Group, says its buy-out of Storability gives StorageTek more staying power. "It appears to be a strategic play," he says. "And it should help round out the vendor's information life-cycle management efforts."
