Media Consolidation Changes Web Traffic Slightly
Fewer sites are claiming more of surfers' time.
In spite of all the dot-com volatility over the last year, the online leaders in site traffic have remained pretty stable. That's one of the outcomes of Jupiter Media Metrix's ranking of the top 50 media/Web properties for June.
The top half of the ranking looks strikingly similar to the sites listed a year ago, although name changes on the list reflect media mergers. AOL Time Warner Network took the top spot--a boost for Time Warner, which came in 11th last June. CNET Networks Inc. ranked 19th last year, but rose to 12th after merging with ZDNet. Terra Lycos S.A. was ranked fifth, while About/Primedia placed seventh.
One dark horse in the lineup is X10.com, which wasn't ranked at all last year but landed in fourth place this year. The site received an extra boost in the rankings due to its ad campaign with pop-up and pop-under pages, which open new browsers for users.
The media consolidation is having a deep impact on Web users. In March, the top 14 sites on Jupiter Media Metrix's list accounted for 60% of Americans' time online. A year ago March, it took 112 sites to achieve that same percentage.
Both home and work surfing has grown over the past year in the United States, according to Jupiter. Employees spent 28.3 billion minutes online in June, up from 17.1 billion a year ago. Surfing at home totaled 76.5 billion minutes in June, compared with 61.3 billion minutes last year.
Here are the top 10 for June year-over-year, from Jupiter Media Metrix's U.S. Top 50 Digital Media/Web Properties:
