Lindows.com Wednesday launched LindowsOS Laptop Edition, a Linux-based operating system specifically tweaked for portable PCs.

The operating system, which can be downloaded from the CNR Warehouse for $49.95 or as a CD direct from Lindows.com, includes laptop-specific power management features, improved compatibility with wireless cards, and support for shortcut keys found on some portables' keyboards.

The new Linux will automatically power down the laptop and place it in 'sleep' mode when the cover is closed -- a feature long found in Windows -- and requires only a two-step process to switch from a network connection to wireless, according to Lindows.com.

It also supports laptops with special e-mail or browser access keys by launching those applications automatically.

LindowsOS Laptop Edition is available now.
