Intel Scraps Co-Manager Roles In Executive Shake-Up

Intel's "two-in-a-box" management structure apparently was a bit crowded. A day after announcing disappointing financial results for its second quarter, Intel on Thursday announced a series of senior management changes that shift group responsibility to single individuals.

Sean Maloney, an executive VP who previously co-managed the company's Mobility Group, will led Intel's Sales and Marketing Group and become chief sales and marketing officer. Donald McDonald, who was previously VP and general manager of the Digital Home Group, will become VP of marketing and brands, reporting to Maloney.

Paul Otellini, president and chief executive, said in a statement that the changes were part of a "thorough analysis" of the company that began in April and focused on the structure of top management. That included Intel's use of "two-in-a-box" co-managers for many of its operational units.

"The moves announced today will help us speed decision making and bring new resources to bear in critical areas, while allowing me to spend more time on key strategic issues," Otellini said.

David Perlmutter, a senior VP, will continue as general manager of the Mobility Group. Anand Chandrasekher, a senior VP and formerly co-general manager of the Sales and Marketing Group, will manage a newly created business unit focused on low-power Intel Architecture products and the ultra-mobile market. Chandrasekher will report to Perlmutter.

Eric Kim, a senior VP who previously co-managed the Sales and Marketing Group, will become general manager of the Digital Home Group.

Will Siu, a 26-year Intel veteran who served as VP and general manager of the Channel Platforms Group, and Richard Wirt, a 25-year Intel veteran who is a VP, senior fellow, and co-general manager of the Software and Solutions Group, are retiring. Both will remain at Intel through the end of the year.

A new general manager of the Channel Platforms Group will be named later. That executive will report to Maloney.

Renee James, VP and co-general manager of the Software and Solutions Group, will continue to manage the group following Wirt's retirement.
