As Intel CEO Paul Otellini told analysts the company sees strong growth ahead for the next few years, the company's senior VP in charge of leading Intel's incursions into the television business said an Intel coalition with key players in that business will reinvent TV in the coming year.From a Wall Street Journal news article headlined "Intel Chief Expects Strong Growth":
The senior vice president spearheading Intel's drive to sell chips for TVs, Eric Kim, promised that the effort would soon bear fruit. People familiar with the situation have said Intel will soon announce the fruits of collaboration in that field with companies that include Google Inc., Sony Corp. and Logitech International SA. Mr. Kim would not comment on what he characterized as rumors, but said the company has major players as partners that would "reinvent" TV over the next year.
That new TV opportunity complements for Intel the ongoing strength it is experiencing from its traditional PC-vendor customers, and led Otellini to forecast growth rates in "low double digits" for the next few years, according to the Journal article.
It's interesting to imagine that a potentially significant portion of that growth could come from the grizzled and stodgy TV industry, particularly at a time of enormous growth in the range and quality of alternative video-consumption devices from smartphones to the iPad and related devices and even the venerable notebook computer.
