1. Editor's Note: The Toys Of Summer
Summer doesn't really start until June 21, but most of us count Memorial Day as the unofficial start of the season. And you'll be dancing in the streets after you read "The Ultimate Summer Gadget Guide."

We gave technology writer George Jones the enviable task of hunting down this summer's gotta-have-it gadgets. He found everything from a digital camera the size of a credit card to a 10-foot-long personal submarine that can dive underneath the water as well as skim along the surface. (I swear I'm not making this up.)

Want to show movies on the side of your house? We've got a media center laptop and DLP projector combo that makes it easy. Trying to improve your golf game? Here's a watch that will help. Looking for the best in-car navigation system for summer road trips? That's here, too. There's even a photo gallery for a close-up view of all the gadgets in the roundup.

We didn't let just any gadget into our guide. For instance, we considered including these innovative solar-powered bags from Voltaic Systems that you can use to recharge your small electronic devices. It's a brilliant concept and perfect for summertime, but $240 is too much to pay for a bag that ugly. Hint to Voltaic: Hire a decent designer and you just might have a hit on your hands.

Other near misses were tiny portable XM satellite radio players from Samsung and Pioneer that double as MP3 players. We love the idea of listening to satellite radio wherever we go this summer, but short battery life and stingy amounts of storage kept these devices off our list.
